How to increase the efficiency of goods transport?
In order to ensure the efficiency of the transport of goods, it is necessary that it be fast, reliable, safe and at the same time as least expensive as possible.
It is not only the means of transport and the technology used that matters, but also how the goods are loaded, whether they are properly secured and properly distributed. In the case of trucks, it is all about maximising the use of the vehicle's size and weight capacity. The appropriate combination of transport routes and vehicles should not be forgotten.
Logistics service provider Geis uses several tools to optimise the load area of its trucks. Knowing the exact parameters of your shipments is essential. This is the only way to plan the entire flow of goods appropriately and efficiently. However, the data from clients who order shipments is not always complete and correct. Geis has a number of system processes to correct this data. Thanks to them, shipment information is adjusted and can be used for better transport planning.
Automation is an important tool for obtaining accurate data. Geis is trialling new mobile phone apps that will use the camera to find out the dimensions of shipments. There are already sophisticated systems for this in warehouses. Geis is now testing a 3D scanner with a camera that automatically transmits shipment parameters directly to dedicated software.
Standardised handling units are used to maximise the use of vehicle space. The most widely used of these is the pallet. Goods are palletised, or placed on transport pallets, as far as possible. These are easy to handle and stackable. Conversely, there is a general tendency to have as few overlapping pallets of non-standard dimensions as possible.
A new feature at Geis is the development of a forwarding system that compares the detected parameters of shipments with the parameters of vehicles so that they are fully utilized. Geis Chief Operating Officer Marian Vaculčiak adds: "With the introduction of the new forwarding software, we will be able to evaluate the loading of individual vehicles at any time and react promptly before they leave for their route."
The company also regularly trains its warehouse staff so that they know how to make the best use of truck capacity. Vaculčiak adds, "The way collection service trucks are loaded and the way trucks from our logistics projects are loaded and dispatched are different. With the projects, we have more time to load and can sort the shipments more easily."
On regular routes between branches and transhipment points, Geis also tries to make transport more efficient by using trailer technology to accompany conventional semi-trailers. A special rig with a total length of more than 25 metres (instead of a conventional 13.6 metre trailer) requires a special permit from the Ministry of Transport. This increases the volume of the load space considerably and is also multiplied by the use of the double decker system, i.e. a double-decker trailer. Compared to a conventional semi-trailer, the capacity can be increased by up to 36 pallets, to a total of 102 pallets. Fuel costs, toll costs and environmental impact are logically reduced by using these trains.
Geis is continuously addressing future challenges across the full range of transport logistics processes. It is constantly testing and developing new applications and projects that increase the efficiency of transport and all other related services. And all this goes hand in hand with technical and technological developments clearly moving towards greater automation, robotization and digitalization. Among other things, it aims to eliminate routine and difficult work for its employees and move them into less stereotypical and demanding positions.
How to use storage capacity efficiently?
With the cost of warehouse space, both owned and rented, and the increasing amount of goods flowing through it, every inch counts. These places don't have a one-size-fits-all storage system, so it's important to plan…
